People-Centered Design

People-Centered Design is a systematic method for designing online and offline solutions that deliberately and actively promote changes in the way people work in order to achieve adoption and business results. It is an evolutionary extension of user-centered design that ensures that solutions are not only easy to use and useful, but that they are adopted and promote desired transformations in work practice.

How People Work, Think and Change - People-Centered Design is a best practice anchored in an explicit understanding of the business objectives and vision, in conjunction with a sound and actionable understanding -- what we call people models -- of how people within an organization work, think, and change. This understanding of work practice and change provides a foundation for organizing and designing solutions that support people in completing their work effectively while inviting and promoting changes in what they know, how they think and make decisions, and how they behave.

Application Throughout the Process - We apply People-Centered Design to every phase of the portal development process, in concert with the LDS methodology, The Logical ApproachSM. We start People-Centered Design by connecting explicit business objectives to a preliminary vision of how people in the organization will need to operate in the future in order to realize the business objectives. Cascading from this analytical start, each subsequent People-Centered Design activity is a disciplined application of our current best practices, designed to deeply infuse transformation into every aspect of the portal development process. The result? Successfully evolved work practices that fully support the overall business objectives.

By placing people in the center of the e-enabled environment, while maintaining focus on the business objectives, we're able to effectively align people-process-technology-assets, speed the design process, manage risk, and ensure that solutions are fully on target to achieve optimal outcomes.

What is People-Centered Design?
Business-focused - We explicitly define the business vision and objectives used to anchor and focus the analysis and design of the solution and adoption support program.

People-centered - We develop a principled understanding of the varied people and their work practices as a foundation for envisioning and elaborating the solution and program; account for the tacit dimension of work and global variations between people segments; keep people in the center throughout the entire lifecycle through their active participation, iterative assessments, and ongoing measurement and feedback.

Adoption and transformation oriented - We understand and model the transformation and adoption process; envision the potential pathways to adoption for key people segments; identify the specific challenges that people are likely to face; identify and apply a coordinated set of adoption levers to meet the challenges; and foster sustained adoption and transformation progress.

Integrative - We envision, plan, and implement an integrated user experience that aligns people, processes, and technology, providing optimal support for work practice success and transformation; weave together and coordinate online and offline channels and components, ensuring that all the moving parts work together to achieve sustained progress from initial awareness to full adoption and integration of the solution into work practice, and achievement of the business and transformation goals.
