Early and sustainable portal adoption is more than measuring traffic volumes. A holistic view of online behavior patterns provide the critical insight into whether these online channels are being used, and being used for important, high-value tasks. To do this, early consideration of the goals of the portal are aligned to likely people-related data and patterns in order to express an "optimal" view of your company’s goals, and desired user experiences and behaviors, for the portal.
Often, what we want to track and analyze relative to online behaviors is closely aligned to the strategy established for the portal, and subsequently to design of the portal or website itself. It's reasonable to suggest that Metrics and Adoption requirements frequently affect the design, including presentation concepts, functionality (for capabilities like smart Search and user Feedback, for example), or in underlying content structures or tagging. So, it is important that this planning activity take place before the design is completed.
Using LDS best practices in alignment to the portal strategy established earlier in our methodology, we define the requirements for Metrics and Adoption Management, the online and offline tools and reports that will be used and produced, and considerations of related tools or capabilities. Design impacts to support these requirements, then, are defined and handed to the design and/or implementation team. Finally, we specify the analysis procedures that portal stakeholders will go through in using this data to improve the portal experience.
